Superior Crane collaborated with Waukesha County Technical College’s Center for Business Performance Solutions with the goal of getting ISO certified. Superior Crane started this journey in December of 2011. In July of 2012, SCC’s Machine Shop successfully passed its certified body audit and received ISO certification. Shortly thereafter, Superior Crane’s Parts, Manufacturing and Service departments followed the same path the Machine Shop had just taken. In July of 2013, Superior Crane’s Machine, Manufacturing, Parts and Service all passed their audits and received ISO certification.
Our process in getting ISO certified was a long road, but with WCTC’s help in education, resources and support, Superior Crane’s goal was reachable. WCTC provided a personal education consultant. The consultant was not only knowledgeable about the ISO clauses, but had firsthand experience in the manufacturing business and was able to relate the clauses to our work processes and size. Other resources from WCTC provided ISO training and experiences with our staff as well as support.
In December of 2012 and February 2013, Superior Crane shipped two cranes which were the largest cranes we’ve built to date. These cranes were built for installation in a steel mill in Arkansas. Each weighed more than 320,000 pounds and was built to handle 42-ton steel loads. These state-of-the-art cranes included platforms, stairways, air conditioned control rooms and cabs. Refrigeration and a microwave for the 24-shifts were luxuries not spared for the constant operation of these cranes.
During our sendoff of one of these cranes, Superior Crane invited WCTC and other members of the business and political communities to join in our success. Waukesha Technical College did not disappoint and was there with many members of their community to support us!
Superior Crane and WCTC continue to join forces in future projects, including the apprenticeship program(s) and education in manufacturing program, to encourage younger workers to seek alternatives to traditional post-secondary education. Superior Crane and WCTC- a great partnership!
